The seminar explores how aesthetics (especially the bodily life that Levinas terms phenomenologically “sensibility” which is prior to identifying the products of various sensory experiences) is connected to ethics and aesthetic experiences might be used to

enliven ethical consciousness. Prof. Blumenfeld-Jones is interested in how this non-verbal and aesthetic process of learning might resonate with Confucian concept of ritual-music body, which is the primary object of educational enlightenment in traditional Chinese pedagogy.

Donald Blumenfeld-Jones’ latest book is Curriculum and the Aesthetic Life, a compilation of 20 years of writing on aesthetics, education, curriculum and ethics. He specializes in aesthetics and curriculum/teaching, curriculum theory, arts-based education research, and ethics. He founded and directed ARTs (Arts-based Reflective Teaching), an elementary education teacher preparation program dedicated to aestheticizing the curriculum and making ethics central to both curriculum planning and teaching. An edited book, Teacher Education in the 21st Century, dedicated to describing the program will be published by Information Age Publishing. He is also publishing a book on Levinas and education titled Ethics, Aesthetics, and Education: A Levinasian Approach to be published Palgrave-Macmillan.

讲座探讨美学(特别是列维纳斯所说身体,现象学所谓在各种感官体验之前的“感性”)和伦理的联系,并进一步讨论美学体验如何能够激活伦理意识。琼斯教授对西方非语言和美学体验的学习过程和中国传统的教育儒家“礼乐”教化之间的相关性很感兴趣,并希望进一步探讨两者之间共鸣之处。

琼斯教授专注于美学和课程/教学、课程理论、艺术教育研究和伦理学研究。他成立并指导ARTS项目(基于艺术的反思性教学)。此项目致力于美学课程,使伦理成为课程规划与教学重点,为从事基础教育的教师的预备课程。《课程与美学生活》是琼斯教授最新出版的专辑。此书是琼斯教授二十余年以来致力于美学、教育、课程与伦理研究的论著。
